Clemens to start for Jets against 'Skins

10/29/2007 - Hempstead, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kellen Clemens will start under center next Sunday for the New York Jets when they host the Washington Redskins, coach Eric Mangini said on Monday.

Mangini made the announcement less than 24 hours after the Jets totaled just three points and 254 yards of offense in a 13-3 loss against Buffalo at the Meadowlands.

Clemens will replace Chad Pennington, who has been the Jets' starter -- when not injured -- since taking over for Vinny Testaverde in Week 4 of 2002 against Jacksonville.

"I talked to Chad, I talked to Kellen and I talked to the team," Mangini said. "And moving into Sunday, Kellen will be the starting quarterback."

This will be Clemens' second start this season, as he was also at the helm in Week 2's 20-13 loss against the Ravens in Baltimore when Pennington was hurt. In that game, Clemens had an early interception, but finished strong as he completed 19-of-37 passes for 260 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Clemens entered Sunday's game against the Bills in the fourth quarter and during the last drive moved the ball to midfield, but on 2nd-and-10, he overthrew Brad Smith and Terrence McGee picked off the ball to seal Buffalo's win.

Pennington helped guide the Jets to 10 wins and a wild-card playoff berth last season, but the Jets have struggled to a 1-7 mark in their first eight games this season. In their last two home games against Philadelphia and Buffalo, the team has failed to register an offensive touchdown.

On the season, Pennington is 128-for-190 with 1,317 yards, nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

"I made this decision not based on singling out Chad for where we are but based on the fact that I think Kellen has earned this opportunity," Mangini said. "In no way is Chad totally responsible, we all are. There are plenty of things each person can improve."

This is the first time in Pennington's career that he's lost the starter's job due to a coach's decision and not due to injury.

What Is the Point Spread?

What are Sports Betting Point Spreads?

In any football or basketball game (the main sports that use point spreads) there are two teams playing against each other.

Those teams, though, are rarely exactly evenly matched – meaning that typically one team has a better chance than the other to win the game. If bettors were allowed to bet on who was simply going to win the game, smart ones would obviously bet on the better team (likely winning more than 50% of the time in the process).

If winning were that easy the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks would stop taking any bets! This is where the point spread comes in: the basic function of the point spread is to balance the likelihood of each team “winning” by adjusting the final score by the point spread. After this adjustment is made you get the Against The Spread result (ATS result for short).

Let’s look at Super Bowl XXXIX, New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Most people believed the defending champ Patriots to be the better team – so if betting were simply based upon which team would win the game, an uneven majority of people would have wagered on New England. But, by using the point spread, the bookmakers adjusted the terms of the bet, evening the proposition so about half the people believed the Pats to be the smart bet, while the other half considered Philly to be the smart bet.

How to Read Point Spreads

New England Patriots -7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The better team, called the Favorite, is expected to win the game and must “give” or “lay” points to the weaker team. The favorite is listed with a minus sign and the number of points they are favored by (e.g., New England -7)

In the case of our example, New England must not only win the game, but they must win by more than 7 points for Pats bettors to have a winning ATS result. An Eagles bettor wins his bet either if:
